Steve Ralston will set one MLS record Saturday and try to close in on another as he looks to help the New England Revolution extend their unbeaten streak to six games when they visit the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Ralston, the league's first rookie of the year in 1996, will move past Chris Henderson by appearing in an MLS-record 318th game. After setting that mark, the four-time All-Star will try to close the two-assist gap between him and Carlos Valderrama's MLS record of 114.
Ralston might have been seen as an unlikely player to challenge for both marks when MLS kicked off in 1996, but the second-round selection by Tampa Bay in the inaugural college draft has turned into one of the most consistent offensive players in league history. He has 58 goals and 112 assists in 317 games -- 315 starts -- for the now-defunct Mutiny and the Revolution (3-1-2).
"He's a smart player," Revs coach Steve Nicol said. "He's got a great soccer brain and he uses it. The brain is always quicker than the legs and he proves it."

Ralston tied Henderson's record and got closer to Valderrama's on Sunday, when he assisted on two goals and scored one of his own in the Revolution's 3-1 win over Chicago.
"If I break the assists record, it's taken six years longer than Carlos," said Ralston, who has one goal and five assists this season. "Let's be honest here. I mean, I've been fortunate to play with some great forwards who happen to score a lot of goals."
One of those forwards is Taylor Twellman, who leads the league with four goals -- two coming off assists from Ralston.
"When you've logged as many minutes in the league as he has, you know that he knows the right things to do on the field," Revolution midfielder Jeff Larentowicz said of Ralston. "He's our captain, he's our leader and he's also got a tireless work ethic."
The Revs have put together a five-game unbeaten run (3-0-2) since losing the season opener 1-0 at Chicago, their only setback in their last 13 regular-season games. New England closed the 2006 season with a 5-0-2 run before eventually losing to Houston in the MLS Cup.
The Revolution will try to keep the unbeaten string intact against a Los Angeles team it has not lost to in five meetings (3-0-2). They last fell to the Galaxy on April 3, 2004, at The Home Depot Center.
The Galaxy (1-1-1) are looking to build on a 3-1 win over Chivas USA on April 28 in which Landon Donovan had a goal and two assists. Los Angeles stepped out of league play on Tuesday, and Donovan had a goal and two assists to help Los Angeles beat New York 3-1 in extra time of a U.S. Open Cup qualifier.
"I think it's great," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said. "Now we can develop some kind of rhythm and get in proper form. Now we can get a series of games in and hopefully keep on winning."
